Not all bags are created equal — but from a photo, they can all look pretty similar. Here's what actually separates a well-made bag from one that just looks the part.

Check the stitching. Even, tight, consistent stitch lines are a good sign. Loose threads, uneven spacing, or visible glue near the seams usually mean corners were cut somewhere in production.

Look at the hardware. Zippers should glide smoothly, not catch or stick. Clasps and D-rings should feel solid, not light or hollow. Cheap hardware is one of the fastest ways a bag starts looking worn after just a few weeks.

Feel the structure. A well-made bag holds its shape — empty or full. If it collapses in on itself the moment you set it down, the internal structure wasn't built to last.

Check the lining. Pull back the top of the bag and look inside. A clean, well-finished lining with no fraying edges is a good sign the same care went into what you don't see, not just what you do.

Consider the maker. Small-batch production, ethical manufacturing, and transparency about materials all tend to correlate with better attention to detail — mass production optimised purely for speed rarely prioritises the things above.
